My Review: Today was a good day. I spent it in bed under my pink Polka dot blanket reading page after page of Dragonfly until I could read no more and it was finished. This book was suggested to me by one of my LJ friends (lizzie_borden) and I found it utterly fantastic. I thought some parts were hard to get through though, because of the vast amount of description the other gives to each and every part.Fredric S. Durbin creates an entire world in only 350 pages and I would have to say that the world he creates is one of the biggest most creative worlds I have ever ventured to by way of reading. The Story Follows the adventures of a little girl who travels through a Laundry shoot into a world called Harvest Moon. In Harvest Moon every day is Halloween and she encounters the likes of vampires, and everything you ever thought could be under your bed or in the darkness of your closet. Throughout Dragonfly (or Bridgett Anne) has to battle and outwit the books Villain Samuel Hain. When the werewolves attack her friends and travel guides and she is captured by Hain's goons she is rescued by a Werewolf named Sylva that in many ways because her first love. When Sylva is killed and his pelt is delivered to Dragonfly she flees to the woods and then befriends a woman and her Grandson that are from the world above as well. Clara who is the grandmother tells dragonfly about the kindness of the gypsy who have saved them from Hain and who built their home deep inside the woods. Days go by and they entertain themselves by telling stories while they wait for the gypsies but the gypsies never come. Eventually Hain realizes where Dragonfly is and comes after her and her companions, Once captured she is forced to do his evil deeds and is made to lead a monster into the protected woods and into the gypsy camps. Thankfully, the gypsies were one step ahead and countered the attack and lead the monster through Harvest Moon itself and the hunters now become the hunted. Throughout the end chapters of this book I found my eyes welling with tears. I honestly did not know how this book would end up until the very last battle and even then I had my doubts but I will leave you to find out which side prevails.
I think that everyone that enjoys embracing the dark side of life or ever wonders what hides in the shadows of a dark room will enjoy this book because it acknowledges our worst fears. I also think that anyone that enjoy female leads will find entertainment in this novel. Dragonfly is a strong and witty little girl wise beyond her years.
In other news I received the Clive Barker book I won on gothauction.com today in the mail and I am excited. I’m not sure if I will read it before or after Neverwhere but I have to finish Dark Harvest first. So many books so little time. This book will also start my 50 books in one year goal.
